We are a new and passionate chamber music group dedicated to the enchanting world of traditional Japanese music. With the sounds of authentic Japanese instruments, mainly the shinobue, the traditional flute, we bring a piece of Japan to you.

Our mission

Our mission is to share the beauty of Japanese music and introduce people to the rich traditions of this enchanting art form. We strive to bring the unique sounds of the shinobue, the Japanese traditional flute, alongside other traditional instruments and to transcend cultural and musical boundaries. Through our performances, we aim to captivate and inspire audiences by bridging the gap between East and West, past and present, and to expand the horizons of chamber music a bit more.

We invite you on our journey together, be carried away by the magical sounds from Japan.

The shinobue is a traditional Japanese bamboo flute known for its clear and melodic tones. This instrument is often used in both solo performances and ensembles and plays an important role in various Japanese musical genres, such as min'yō (folk music) and festival music. The flute consists of a single piece of bamboo with several finger holes that can be used to play different notes and melodies. The simplicity of its construction masks the complexity and deep emotional expression that the shinobue can offer. The instrument is cherished not only for its musical versatility, but also for its ability to convey a sense of timelessness and cultural richness.

Who we are

Itsumi Takahashi

Itsumi studied modern flute at the Kunitachi College of Music in Japan. She is particularly motivated by historically based musical expression.

From 2016 she studied Flauto Traverso with Frank Theuns and Anna Besson at Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel. She is currently studying harpsichord with Ewald Demeyere at IMEP.

She performed J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with La Petite Bande under the direction of Sigiswald Kuijken at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 2022 and 2023.

Nozomi Kanda

Nozomi Kanda is an internationally acclaimed flutist who has performed in numerous countries, including Belgium, Japan, and Spain, collaborating with renowned artists and ensembles. She specializes in 20th-century Japanese music, premiering works by composers like David Loeb and Jean-Pierre Deleuze.

Nozomi also plays the shinobue and regularly performs traditional Japanese music with ensembles, koto, shamisen etc. Nozomi is a graduate of the Mons Royal Conservatory, and the Tosha school of Japanese Traditional Music.

Miriam De Wolf

Miriam started her studies in modern flute at the Royal Conservatories of Brussels, whereafter she continued her bachelors with Valerie Debaele in Tilburg (NL). At the Royal Conservatoire de Liège she obtained her masters in flute with Toon Fret, and her masters in piccolo with Miriam Arnold. She also has a degree in engineering, specialised in artifical intelligence. She envisions to combine both passions in her daily life. As a musician she mainly plays chamber music in different formations.
